DISCUSS BOTH SIDES - OPINION - STUDENT ESSAYS

Reminder: All Task 2's include "Explain your answers and provide relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge."

Some people think that illegal Internet downloads are having a negative effect on the music industry. Others feel that they have little or no impact on artists. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

With easy availability of the Internet, individuals are able to gain free access to the music that normally needs to be bought. While some believe that there is little to no issue on unauthorized music download, I agree with those who feel that unlawful music download has a drawback on the industry.

People who believe that there is no harm in illicit music download argue that it is just a copy on a computer file. They think that the product still exits and can still be sold.* They also claim that the act of illegal downloading does no harm to an artist as they believe the artist is entitiled to earn from concerts and selling merchandise. Therefore, if they like the music after downloading they might go the artist's concert or buy their merchandise.
However, in my opinion there are more stronger arguments as to why unlicensed music download is disadvantageous to the music industry. First, piracy costs the record companies millions of dollars in revenue and as witah most business, those losses disproportionately affect s the lower level workers. Additionally, there is less money for producers and talent scouts to recruit new blood to the entertainment industry. The most compelling argument is that the new music talents are suffered the most because of illegal downloads. Breaking in new artists take a lot of their time, energy and of course money. If record companies are at loss, then they are going to take steps to save their money, and the first casualties of their decision are these emerging new artists whose budget are slashed.

In conclusion, although some may argue that downloading from internet is just copying and cause no harm to the artist, the loss that record companies incurs and the slash in budget of new talents are a big blow to the music industry. Therefore, I firmly believe that copyright act must be strictly established to prevent such illicit activity.
